Nantucket police sergeant Howard McIntyre will appear before a court magistrate next month on suspicion of drunken driving, and could potentially face additional weapons charges stemming from an incident on Old South Road last Thursday night.

Island police have filed an application for a criminal complaint of driving under the influence of alcohol against McIntyre, and called on the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s office to investigate whether additional charges should be filed.

Police chief Bill Pittman described the chain of events that led to the allegations against McIntyre, which started with a 911 call around 11:25 p.m. last Thursday night.

Pittman said McIntyre was off-duty and driving his personal vehicle when he allegedly tailgated another car on Old South Road with two female occupants while flashing his high beams. Pittman said the women claimed that they pulled over on Goldfinch Drive, where they exited their vehicle and were approached by McIntyre, who ordered them back into their car. One of the women recognized McIntyre, and thought they saw him holding a firearm, Pittman said. They called 911 when they were back inside their vehicle around 11:25 p.m., and reported that the suspect had fled the area.
