NJ - Airport TSA workers accused of racial profiling
Security screeners at Newark Liberty
International Airport in New Jersey are accused of racially profiling
travelers.
A federal report, made public by the Star-Ledger Newspaper, says screeners singled out Mexican and Dominican passengers for nearly two years.
According to the paper, racial profiling was so prevalent in 2008 and 2009 that some TSA employees at the airport referred to their colleagues as "Mexican hunters."
The report says Spanish-speaking travelers' documents were scrutinized to drive up numbers for the airport's behavior detection officer unit to make that unit appear productive.
A TSA spokeswoman described the situation in Newark as "isolated," and says the agency does not permit racial profiling.
