AZ - Proposed gun laws could impact colleges
KINGMAN — It’s not even January and two bills proposed in the
state legislature could turn into a heated debate during the 2011 state
legislature.
The 50th session of the Arizona legislature begins Jan. 10 with two proposed state House bills that could allow guns on college campuses. The first House bill, HB-2001, allows university or community college faculty members to carry a concealed gun on campus. A faculty member would be a professor, an assistant professor or a lecturer. It does not include research or teaching assistants.
The other bill, HB-2014, would restrict a governing board of a university or community college or the college from banning a person from possessing a concealed weapon with a valid permit.
Arizona Sen. Ron Gould, R-Lake Havasu City, is cosponsoring HB-2001 and supports HB-2014. He said by banning guns, college campuses become self-defense free zones such as at Virginia Tech University. In April 2007, a Virginia Tech student killed 32 students then himself in the worst shooting on a college campus in the country’s history.
“I have no problem with law abiding citizens carrying guns,” Gould said.
