CT - Body-scan radiation worries state rep

While the North Stonington Democrat was at the Baltimore airport, she said she saw what appeared to be a 3-year-old child being forced into the scanner.

"He's crying, and he's scared, and I'm like ‘what are you doing?'" she said. "It was absurd."

Urban said she tries to limit her exposure to unnecessary radiation, and even discusses each X-ray she gets from her dentist to be sure it's necessary. Because she's a frequent flier, she said she doesn't want to expose herself again and again and allow that radiation to add up.

A better alternative, both safer for passengers and better able to protect planes from terrorists, she said, is to use the system used in Israel. Passengers in Israeli airports undergo extensive interviews from trained security agents, she said, and there has never been a problem.

The next time she flies, she will opt for the pat-down "to see what exactly is going on," she said, instead of the body scan.

"I will be requesting a pat-down, and I will have a camera," she said.
