WA - Oak Harbor School District enacts policy to search Cell Phones
After months of debate, the Oak Harbor School District has enacted a policy it hopes will curb the growing problem of cyber bullying.
Last week, the school board approved a plan that allows administrators to search a students cell phone if they beleive that student is using it for "sexting," or cyber bullying.
When the plan was first announced, the ACLU spoke out, saying there were privacy concerns. But Assistant Superintendent Lance Gibbon says those have been addressed, and that administrators must have a reasonable suspicion.
"The scope would be limited to the violation of which the student was accused," said Gibbon. "So that it wasn't some blanket or random search and I think that helped address most of the concerns."
