ME - Residents cajole Bath council to take stand against war spending

BATH — Bath resident Karen Wainberg was among those who urged the Bath City Council on Wednesday to consider a resolution protesting the expenditure of federal tax dollars on ongoing wars in the Middle East.

She and others associated with the group “Bring Our War Dollars Home” asked the council to schedule a public hearing on their proposed resolution and ultimately to  vote on it. Council Chairman Bernard Wyman told Wainberg he would consult his fellow councilors and gauge whether they want to schedule such a hearing.

Wainberg said $2.26 million in federal tax dollars is paid by Bath residents each year to fund on goingU.S. involvement in overseas wars, while local health care and education organizations are struggling.

Bath resident Mark Wilson was among those who agreed with Wainberg’s message, saying he and other parents are still paying off a $30,000 loan for their kids to travel to a national Odyssey of the Mind competition last year.

“The wars are costing us $3,800 per second,” he said. “About eight seconds of war funding could have paid for that Odyssey of the Mind trip.”
