MI - Urban Farming in Detroit - Part II
Detroit -- The city will demolish 3,000 abandoned homes and other structures in residential areas, knock down 10,000 abandoned structures by year's end and push his plan to shrink city, Mayor Dave Bing is expected to say in his first State of the City address.
In an advance copy of the speech, Bing addresses the city's shrinking population,large number of abandoned properties and troubled school district. He also laid out plans for attacking the city's $325 million deficit against a backdrop of a 30 percent jobless rate for the city's residents and 50,000 homeowners facing foreclosure.
The mayor said strengthening the city "will take a long-term strategy for how we use Detroit's 140 square miles more productively."
