NC - Schools cut 880 positions and middle school sports
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is moving forward with a plan to cut more than 800 positions and eliminate middle school sports.
School staff is beginning to implement four levels of budget cuts that were presented to school board members last week, Superintendent Peter Gorman said during his weekly media briefing Wednesday, Sept 24.
That would cut 880 positions, including 658 teacher positions, and eliminate middle school sports, saving the school district nearly $60million.
But Gorman said he has not made a recommendation on whether to close unspecified underutilized schools, which is included in the fifth level of cuts. The board would make that decision in March or early April for staff to work through the logistics of closing schools and moving students to others.
The school system is facing another tough budget year and expects to see $82 million in funding cuts from the state and county to the district’s $1 billion budget.
Gorman will present his final budget to the school board April 13.
