Road salt makes its way into home wells
HUNTSVILLE — A Huntsville family hasreason to believe the well water at their Brunel Road home has been contaminated by road salt.
In December, the Forester reported the results of the family’s well-water analysis that indicated their drinking water has about four times the Ontario guideline amounts for both sodium and chloride.
Since the story was first reported in the Forester, homeowner Paula Boon has been interviewed on the subject on CBC radio and neighbours have expressed concerns about their own well water to her.
The family is now drinking bottled water, but Boon is concerned about any health issues that may arise from drinking salt-contaminated water in the past, about damage that may have been done to their water and plumbing systems, and about the value of their house.
Husband Niko Byl has been on blood pressure medication for a year and they wonder if the salt-laden water has adversely affected his health.
There is no regulatory limit on the amount of sodium that can be in drinking water, but there is a regulation that requires levels to be reported to the local health unit if they exceed 20 parts per million. The health unit suggests those drinking the water contact their physician if they have any health issues, particularly if they have a heart condition.
The Brunel Road family’s water contains 800 parts sodium and 1000 parts chloride per million.
