IN - 133 cameras hooked to police dispatchers at University

Purdue University will soon be under the 24-hour eye of campus police.

Surveillance cameras are being installed at 54 locations, mostly at parking garages, now through May as part of a plan to increase safety and crime prevention on campus.

"This is not being used so we can be Big Brother," said Purdue Police Chief John Cox. "The two things we want is to deter crime and to solve crime. It is mainly to help protect the structures, our staff, our students and visitors to our campus from being victimized."

By fall Cox plans to have 133 exterior cameras allowing police dispatchers to monitor public spaces from a control center in the campus headquarters.

More than $1.4 million has been spent so far on the project, which began last year.
