IA - Only drive on gravel roads in the morning says county engineer
In a letter to rural residents of Boone County, county engineer Bob Kieffer asked them to “take into account road conditions and voluntarily adjust routes and travel times accordingly.”
“As warmer weather arrives, the melting of snow and possible early spring rains will saturate the upper layer of material on the gravel road system,” Kieffer wrote. “This soft layer is then disturbed by traffic, causing rapid deterioration of the road surface. Heavier traffic increases this deterioration.”
He said gravel roads go through this melting and thawing process every year, but conditions caused by this past winter’s snowfall will be far more severe. The Secondary Roads Department, he said, has asked residents to voluntarily limit their travel and the weight they carry on the system.
“Please consider limiting travel to the early morning hours during cooler weather,” he said. “We are asking you to take into account road conditions and voluntarily adjust routes and travel times accordingly.”
Kieffer noted state law allows counties to impose temporary weight restrictions and embargoes on roadways. However, he wants to give residents of the county an opportunity to voluntarily assist in maintaining the integrity of the secondary roads.
