VA - Chief addresses pain pills in local high school

ELKTON — “Some of today’s kids aren’t like the kids of 10 or 20 years ago,” began Elkton Chief of Police Kevin Whitfield.  “If you’re a parent or a teacher, you have to pay closer attention to drugs kept in your medicine cabinet and the chance that they are in your school.”

Whitfield made these remarks as the presenter at the ElktonNeighborhood Watch’s regular monthly program last week in the JuniorOrder’s hall in Blue Ridge Park.

“Some kids today go into their parents medicine cabinets and get prescription painkillers out,” he continued. “Then they can grind the pill up so they can ‘snort’ it through a straw or a rolled-up dollar bill.

“Or they may sell it on the street. One prescription pain pill can bring as much as $20,” said Whitfield.

Whitfield’s department is increasingly aware of the problem, especially since a case of drug use arose in a local school two weeksago.

“In other towns kids collect pills from their parents medicine cabinets and get together for a ‘pharm party,’” said Pete Hill of the Elkton Children’s and Family Clinic. “It’s very dangerous and they don’t realize it.

“Nationally, death from prescription pills may be exceeding death from illegal drugs,” he added.
