Local merchants discuss ways to promote selves and each other
When Beverly Foster, owner of Beverly Hillson Main, began organizing a meeting of her fellow merchants, her intent was to inform them of a concept called the 3 50 Project, which encourages consumers to buy from their local, independent businesses as much as possible. But the meeting, held last Thursday in the offices of the Jamestown News, quickly expanded its scope to include a number of ideas and suggestions designed to increase awareness and, in turn, profits for the local business community.
XXA total of 14 people representing eight downtown retail businesses attended the after-work meeting. The library, an Adams Farm restaurant,an accounting firm, a town councilman and two interested citizens also attended as a show of support.
XXProposals centered around ways in which the various businesses could collectively and cooperatively promote each other. One idea was for each merchant to have customer appreciation cards offering discount coupons at other businesses, brochures featuring each participating business, a Website, an e-mail database, a direct mail campaign, and cooperative ad buys in various media outlets.
XXThe idea of the town printing its own “money” was also floated. The“dollars” are actually coupons that entitle the bearer to a predetermined discount at the community's businesses. It has been tried in other locales, with varying degrees of success.
