Laredo police officer pleads guilty to drug charges

LAREDO,Texas (AP) - A Laredo police officer has pleaded guilty to escorting cars he believed to be carrying loads of cocaine through town.

Pedro Martinez III and another man pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges of conspiring to possess with intent to distribute cocaine, the U.S.attorney's office announced.

Martinez admitted to meeting in 2008 with a drug dealer - who was actually an FBI undercover officer - and agreeing to escort two carloads of cocaine through Laredo. On 1 of those occasions he was in uniform and driving a marked police car.

Martinez, 32, and Guillermo Villarreal, 34, each face 10 years to life in prison. A sentencing date hasn't been set.
