NEW ORLEANS – Former State Senator Derrick Shepherd was sentenced to 37 months in jail and given three years of supervised probation and was fined $45,000 for his role in a federal corruption case.
Shepherd pled guilty in 2008 to conspiring to help launder money for an illegal insurance business.
Shepherd apologized to the court and the community. He said he had used ‘poor judgment.’
Judge Carl Barbier also ordered Shepherd to undergo substance abuse treatment and mental health counseling while in prison.
