"Watch Out For Children" signs stolen by feds to make new signs

It was the county Highway Department removing the signs deemed obsolete by the federal Highway Administration.

“They are no longer legal traffic signs,” said Elizabeth Black, county public information officer.

“The Highway Department has slowly been taking them down over the last year.”
Removal of the signs began after the Highway Department received an an advisory from the Highway Administration that states such warning signs “do nothing to reduce driver speeds or crash rates.”

Black said the Highway Department is remaking the Watch for Children signs as new traffic signs.
