COUNCILS are using digital technology to ensure pool fences comply with safety standards.

Web-based satellite systems such as Google Earth, Google Street View and popular real estate websites are being used to by local councils to check that pool barriers meet national safety regulations.

Municipal Association of Victoria president Bill McArthur said he was aware a number of councils were turning to the new technology to conduct safety inspections on pool fences.

“We know some local councils are using real estate websites and satellite imagery to keep an eye on pool fences,” Mr McArthur said.
