Dying Officers - Is this a new trend or something they are reporting on more?

It seems every other week there is another BREAKING NEWS report about an officer going down.  2 or 3 or 4 at a time now.
Is it a trend here in Washington or is this something that we're seeing throughout the country or is this just a new tactic to distract us from national news such as Health Care Reform, The War and so many other IMPORTANT news stories.

Here is WA state;

It started with One officer in Seattle, WA
2 Weeks later - 4 officers in Lakewood, WA
2 weeks later - 2 officers shot in Eatonville, WA

Let me do a quick search for "Officer Shot" in Google

Google thinks for me and brings up:

Winston-Salem, NC December 22, 2009-- Two Winston-Salem police officers were shot at aBojangles' restaurant on Peters Creek Parkway Wednesday morning. Thesuspect, Monte Denard Evans, died during a shootout with the officers.
LAKEWOOD, N.J. September 24th 2009- Gunfire erupted as a police tactical squad executed a no-knock searchwarrant in a New Jersey suburb Thursday, leaving four officers and asuspect shot.
South Aukland (Not US) December 22, 2009- The shooting comes at the end of a harrowing 18 months for police inwhich seven officers have been shot, two fatally. The sequence hasrevived calls for officers to be armed.
Sanford, NC  December 21, 2009 - Sanford police say Officer Scott Norton was shot five times in the early hours of Sunday morning. Sanford police arrested 21-year-old Breon Montrell Black Sunday, for his involvement in the shooting.

What do you think?  Is it random events or something more?

It's becoming quite repetitive and hopefully the officers won't have to go through what military families go through when one of their family is killed in the line of duty.  Nothing.  Nothing is done, no one helps the family and no one seems to care.  They MIGHT get a 4 second mention on the news.  That is what happens when the deaths become "normal" and "expected".  I would hate to see that happen in this instance although I really wish we ALL did more for the soldiers' families who have died.
